D&D Beyond Offers Free Mimic Minis for Now Defunct Sigil VTT

After years of build up and millions of dollars in development, Wizards of the Coast recently pulled the plug on their much publicized Sigil VTT, laying off 90% of the team in the process. Sigil – which at one point was touted as a major video game style platform that would generate recurring revenue – is now more or less on life support and going forward will exist solely as a bonus feature to D&D Beyond subscribers.

Despite Sigil essentially being sunset, however, Wizards of the Coast recently unveiled their new Unclaimed Treasure Pack, which consists of two new digital miniatures and is available for free on D&D Beyond. It’s extremely odd timing given the layoffs and shift in direction for Sigil, but points to what we may see in the near future as far as the platform is concerned. Below, we take a closer look at all the details.

The hidden and revealed versions of the new mimic digital miniature for the D&D Sigil VTT.

What is the Sigil Mimic Miniatures Set?

The Unclaimed Treasure Pack set contains two free digital miniatures. The first is a Mimic disguised as a standard treasure and the second is the monster in its fully revealed form. To use either, you do need to have Sigil installed on your computer. Both are available for free as long as you are a D&D subscriber of any tier.

Notably, the stats for the creature are using the new 2024 Monster Manual and are designed to integrate directly with D&D Beyond (although as past Sigil reviewers have noted, this isn’t quite a seamless experience).

Final Thoughts

Notably, this isn’t the only miniature that’s been showcased for Sigil. In fact, players who pre-ordered the 2024 Player’s Handbook were supposed to receive a custom Ancient Gold Dragon digital miniature (although these have yet to be released). It’s also not yet clear if we’ll see other miniatures also coming out for Sigil in the near future, despite the platform essentially being scrapped. In all likelihood, however, there are assets that have already been created for Sigil which we’ll be seeing in the months ahead.

In the meantime, you can download the Unclaimed Treasure Pack now on D&D Beyond.

Cameron Nichols is a Senior Editor who lives in Boston, Massachusetts, and has been playing D&D since the early 90s, when he was introduced by his older brother and cut his teeth on AD&D 2nd Edition. Since then he’s played virtually every RPG he could get his nerdy little mitts on (including a weird Goth phase in the early 2000s when he rocked Vampire: The Masquerade pretty hard). His favorite D&D campaign setting is the Forgotten Realms and his favorite character to play was a Half-Orc Barbarian named Grug (who was unfortunately devoured by a gelatinous cube).
